What Is the Komatsu PC210 with Mulching Thumb?

The Komatsu PC210 is a 22-ton excavator powered by a 165-horsepower diesel engine. It’s built for heavy-duty work in demanding conditions, with a maximum reach of 33 feet from the boom and a digging depth of up to 22 feet.

No matter your terrain, our machine’s advanced hydraulic system gives the operator precise control over every movement.

Paired with a mulching head, the boom arm becomes a precision cutting and grinding tool that can reach in directions and at angles that no ground-based mulcher can manage. The hydraulic thumb attachment gives the machine a gripping capability that allows the operator to grab, sort, and reposition root balls, large limbs, debris, and more, with the kind of control you’d expect from a hand crew. All of this at the scale of a 22-ton machine.

The combination of mulching head and hydraulic thumb on a single carrier machine means we can transition between grinding vegetation and handling heavy material without switching machines or bringing in additional equipment. That keeps the project moving and keeps costs down.

What Makes The PC210 Different From a Standard Forestry Mulcher?

A tracked forestry mulcher sits on the ground and works forward. It’s excellent at covering flat to mildly sloped terrain efficiently, and it’s our first call on most cedar and brush clearing jobs across the Hill Country. But it has hard limits:

It cannot work from a fixed position and reach across a slope below it.
It cannot extend over a tree canopy to clear brush beneath without entering the area itself.
It cannot grab a root ball and pull it free.
On terrain steeper than it can safely climb, it stops.

The PC210 changes those limits. The excavator sits in a stable position on firm ground, and the 33-foot boom arm does the work. That means the machine can clear a hillside from the top without ever having to descend it.

It can reach over the outer edge of a live oak canopy and work the cedar and brush underneath without ever touching the tree. It can access creek banks, ravines, and drainage features from above rather than trying to climb into them.

The machine’s reach is the tool. Where it sits doesn’t have to be where the work is.

Clearing Hill Country Hillsides and Slopes

Steep terrain is one of the defining challenges of land clearing work across the Edwards Plateau and the broader Texas Hill Country. Cedar and mesquite don’t respect the angle of a slope. They grow on hillsides, along limestone ledges, and down into canyon cuts just as aggressively as they take over flat pasture.

Getting a standard mulcher onto a steep hillside is either impractical or unsafe. Getting it back off is sometimes worse. That leaves a lot of landowners with cleared flat ground and brush-covered slopes that remain untouched because no machine could safely work them.

The PC210 solves this without putting the machine at risk. Our operator positions the excavator on stable ground at the top of the slope and uses the full reach of the boom to clear downward. The mulching head grinds cedar, brush, and mesquite on slopes that would be inaccessible to any other machine we own. The mulch stays on the hillside, protecting the soil from erosion and giving native grasses the chance to take hold once the invasive pressure is gone.

For Hill Country properties with drainage cuts, canyon edges, creek banks, or any slope that’s been out of reach for years, this machine gets into the work that everything else had to skip.

Working Around and Under Live Oak Trees

Live oaks are worth protecting. They’re deep-rooted, drought-tolerant, and part of what makes a Hill Country property worth owning. The problem is that cedar and brush frequently grow in, under, and around them, and clearing that vegetation without damaging the oaks is a job that requires both precision and reach.

A tracked mulcher working in a live oak stand risks damaging surface roots, scraping bark on low-hanging branches, and compacting the soil in the root zone. Hand crews with chainsaws can do the work but move slowly and can’t handle volume. The PC210 with a mulching head gives us a third option.

The excavator sits outside the drip line of the tree. The boom reaches in and mulches the brush and cedar growing beneath the canopy without the machine ever entering the root zone.
